La vie et les images de Peter Hujar (1934-1987) sont inséparables de la ville de New York. Indépendant par nature, volontiers combatif, cultivé et très bien introduit dans le milieu artistique, Hujar évoluait au sein d'une scène avant-gardiste faite de danseurs, de musiciens, de plasticiens et de travestis. Son accomplissement en tant que photographe fut contemporain de l’évolution et de la visibilité du mode de vie gay entre 1969 — date des émeutes de Stonewall — et la crise du sida dans les années 1980.
« Peter Hujar : Speed of Life (la vie à toute vitesse) » présente une sélection d’environ 140 photographies de cet artiste particulièrement important et influent. L’exposition suit le parcours d’Hujar, depuis ses débuts au milieu des années 1950, jusqu’aux années 1980 où il est l’un des acteurs importants de la scène artistique de l’East Village.
The life and art of Peter Hujar (1934–1987) were rooted in downtown New York. Private by nature, combative in manner, well-read, and widely connected, Hujar inhabited a world of avant-garde dance, music, art, and drag performance. His mature career paralleled the public unfolding of gay life between the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. "Peter Hujar: Speed of Life" presents a selection of about 140 photographs by this particularly important and influential artist. The exhibition follows Hujar's journey from his beginnings in the mid-1950s to the 1980s, when he was one of the major artist in the East Village's art scene.
